BXHR WAS BUILT OUT OF MY STRUGGLE

I picked up my first pair of boxing gloves when I was 17. Back then, I couldn’t afford my own. We didn’t have Atome, either you had the cash or you went without. So I used the gym gloves. You know the ones; worn-out, sweat-soaked, stiff in all the wrong places. They didn’t fit, they stank, and they definitely weren’t made for someone like me. My dad, seeing my struggle, decided to buy me some gloves. He wanted to help but he didn’t really understand what I needed - they were bag gloves, way too small and basic. I wore through them quickly.

I didn’t own a proper pair of gloves until I was 25. I was earning good wage and could finally afford to invest in myself. But even then, I made the wrong choice. I didn’t know what I know now, so I went for the “best” gloves. The big-name brand. The expensive ones. Each time I was disappointed, they were uncomfortable. Loose around my wrist and every time I punched, I felt it in my bones. They weren’t made for me a women with small hands, they were made for a man. I wore them anyway because I didn’t have a choice.

The shift happened quietly, but it changed everything

When I became a coach, I started to notice a shift in the sport and in my heart. More women were showing up at the gym, excited, curious, ready to train. But as each one slipped on the house gloves, I’d see the same hesitation in their eyes and the inevitable question would come, "Do you have anything smaller?" I’d explain the industry trope, that it was about the weight not fit, that 14oz were standard for partner drills, that is was OK that the gloves were loose on their hands. But deep down, I knew exactly how they felt and felt frustrated that they had to go through it too.

What happened next hit even harder. Those that fell in love with the sport as I did, followed my path. The joined the gym, started training and struggled with the gym gloves until they had saved up for the big-name gloves. They would arrive in the gym proud of their new purchase, only to find as I did that these hard earned gloves may look beautiful and smell fresh, but they fit no better than the gym gloves. You could see the disappointment on their faces. Some even got injured, the gloves being too big to provide proper support.

Slowly an anger built into a realisation - this wasn’t just coincidence, it wasn’t just me. This was a cycle that every female boxer went through. A cycle I had the power to break. I knew I had to do something, not just for myself, but for every woman stepping into the ring.

BXHR exits to break the cycle
